師行脚時，會一官人云：「三祖信心銘，弟子擬註。」師云：「纔有是非，紛然失心，作麼生註？」（法眼代云：「恁麼則弟子不註也。」）

When the Master was traveling on foot, he met an official who said, "I plan to write a commentary on the Third Patriarch's *Faith in Mind*." The Master said, "'As soon as there is affirmation and negation, the mind is lost in confusion.' How will you comment on it?" (Fayan spoke on his behalf: "If so, then your disciple will not comment on it.")
