1.70

師問僧：「甚處來？」云：「遊山來。」師云：「還到頂麼？」云：「到。」師云：「頂上有人麼？」云：「無人。」師云：「恁麼則不到頂也。」云：「若不到頂，爭知無人？」師云：「何不且住？」云：「某甲不辭住，西天有人不肯。」師云：「我從來疑著這漢。」

The Master asked a monk, "Where have you come from?"
He said, "I have come from wandering the mountains."
The Master said, "Did you reach the peak?"
He said, "I reached it."
The Master said, "Was there anyone on the peak?"
He said, "There was no one."
The Master said, "In that case, you did not reach the peak."
He said, "If I did not reach the peak, how could I know there was no one?"
The Master said, "Why didn't you stay a while?"
He said, "I wouldn't decline to stay, but someone in the Western Heavens would not permit it."
The Master said, "I had suspected this fellow all along."
