1.74

師問僧：「甚處來？」云：「三祖塔頭來。」師云：「既從祖師處來，又要見老僧作甚麼？」云：「祖師即別，學人與和尚不別。」師云：「老僧欲見闍黎本來師，還得否？」云：「亦須待和尚自出頭來始得。」師云：「老僧適來，暫時不在。」

The Master asked a monk, "Where have you come from?"
He said, "I have come from the Third Patriarch's stupa."
The Master said, "Since you come from the Patriarch's place, why do you also want to see this old monk?"
He said, "The Patriarch is different; this student and the Upādhyāya are not different."
The Master said, "This old monk wishes to see the Ācārya's original teacher; is it possible?"
He said, "One must also wait until the Upādhyāya sticks his own head out; only then will you get it."
The Master said, "Just now this old monk was absent for a short while."
