師因雲巖諱日營齋。僧問：「和尚於雲巖處，得何指示？」師云：「雖在彼中，不蒙指示。」云：「既不蒙指示，又用設齋作甚麼？」師云：「爭敢違背他。」云：「和尚初見南泉，為甚麼却與雲巖設齋？」師云：「我不重先師道德佛法，祇重他不為我說破。」云：「和尚為先師設齋，還肯先師也無？」師云：「半肯、半不肯。」云：「為甚麼不全肯？」師云：「若全肯，即孤負先師也。」

Because of the memorial day of Yunyan, the Master prepared a feast. A monk asked, "What instruction did the Upādhyāya receive from Yunyan?" The Master said, "Although I was in that place, I did not receive instruction." The monk asked, "Since you did not receive instruction, why bother preparing a feast?" The Master said, "How would I dare transgress against him?" The monk asked, "The Upādhyāya first met Nanquan; why do you instead prepare a feast for Yunyan?" The Master said, "I do not esteem the late master's virtue or Buddhadharma; I only esteem that he did not explain it fully for me." The monk asked, "Since the Upādhyāya prepares a feast for the late master, do you still endorse the late master or not?" The Master said, "Half endorse, half do not endorse." The monk asked, "Why do you not completely endorse him?" The Master said, "If I completely endorsed him, I would betray the late master."
