The Master visited Nanyuan and went up to the Dharma hall. Nanyuan said, "We have already met." The Master then went down. The next day he went up again and asked, "Yesterday I already received the Upādhyāya's compassion; I do not know where it was that we already met?" Nanyuan said, "Mind after mind without interruption, flowing into the sea of nature." The Master said, "I nearly let it pass by." When the Master took his leave, Nanyuan said, "Study the Buddhadharma extensively, and broadly bring about benefit." The Master said, "Extensively studying the Buddhadharma I do not ask about; what is broadly bringing about benefit?" Nanyuan said, "Do not violate a single thing."
