The Master went with Senior Uncle Mi to Mount Long to pay respects. An old monk said, "There is no path on this mountain; where did you come from, ācāryas?" The Master said, "Setting aside the absence of a path, from where did the Upādhyāya enter?" The old monk said, "I did not come following clouds and water." The Master said, "How long has the Upādhyāya lived on this mountain?" The old monk said, "Springs and autumns do not concern it." The Master said, "Did the Upādhyāya live here first, or did this mountain exist first?" The old monk said, "I do not know." The Master said, "Why do you not know?" The old monk said, "I did not come from among humans or devas." The Master said, "What principle did the Upādhyāya attain to dwell on this mountain?" The old monk said, "I saw two mud oxen fight their way into the sea, and down to this day all news has ceased." Only then did the Master adopt full comportment and make prostrations.
