The Master's personal name was Liangjie, a son of the Yu family of Kuaiji. In his childhood he followed a teacher to recite the Prajñāpāramitā-hṛdaya-sūtra. Coming to the passage, "no eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body, or mind," he suddenly touched his face with his hand and asked his teacher, "I have eyes, ears, nose, tongue, and so forth; why does the sūtra say they do not exist?" His teacher was astonished and amazed by him, saying, "I am not your teacher." He then directed him to Wuxie Mountain to bow to Chan Master Lingmo and have his head shaved. At the age of twenty-one, he went to Songshan and received upasaṃpadā. Wandering on pilgrimage, he first called upon Nanquan. It happened to be the memorial anniversary of Mazu, and a feast was being prepared. Nanquan asked the assembly, "Tomorrow we will hold the memorial feast for Mazu; I wonder, will Mazu still come?" No one in the assembly could answer. The Master stepped forward and replied, "When there is a companion, he will come." Nanquan said, "Although this fellow is a junior, he is well worthy of being carved and polished." The Master said, "Upādhyāya, do not oppress an innocent person into slavery."
