A monk took leave of Daci. Daci asked, "Where are you going?" The monk said, "Going to Jiangxi." Daci said, "May I trouble you with a matter?" The monk said, "What matter does the upādhyāya have?" Daci said, "Could you take this old monk along with you?" The monk said, "Even someone who surpasses the upādhyāya could not be taken along." Daci then dropped the matter. Later, the monk recounted this to the Master. The Master said, "How could you speak like that, ācārya?" The monk said, "What would the upādhyāya say?" The Master said, "I can." (Fayan remarked instead, "If the upādhyāya goes, I shall carry the bamboo hat.") The Master also asked the monk, "Did Daci have any other sayings?" The monk said, "He once instructed the assembly, saying: 'To speak a zhang is not as good as to practice a chi; to speak a chi is not as good as to practice a cun.'" The Master said, "Would I say it that way?" The monk said, "What would the upādhyāya say?" The Master said, "Speak of what cannot be practiced; practice what cannot be spoken of."
