師曰：「凡情聖見是金銷玄路，直須回互，夫取正命食者，須具三種墮，水牯牛，不受食，不斷聲色（今案）。只墮去，是甚麼人分上事。」　揀曰：「欲知則是入異類中，不認沙門邊事，所以古人權借水牯牛為異類，秖是事上異類，非言語中異類（須看取四種異類中）。」

The master said, "Ordinary feelings and sagely views are golden chains on the mysterious road; one must directly interact and harmonize. Now, one who takes the food of right livelihood must possess the three kinds of falls: the water buffalo, not receiving food, and not severing sound and form (present note). Just falling away—what sort of person's affair is this?" Jian said, "If you wish to know, it is entering among different species and not acknowledging the matters on the śramaṇa's side. Therefore the ancients provisionally borrowed the water buffalo as a different species; it is only a different species in phenomenal terms, not a different species in speech (one must examine it within the four kinds of different species)."
