The second is the bodhisattva's sharing different species: meaning that after losing sight of oneself, one then enters among the different species of birth and death to gather others; having already realized the fruit of nirvāṇa, one does not abandon the species of birth and death; benefiting oneself and benefiting others, one vows that all sentient beings will attain buddhahood and that I will attain buddhahood at the very last. Therefore, if a great expedient bodhisattva does not first transform sentient beings, his own matter has no way to be accomplished. Hence Nanquan said, 'First go over to that side and know the existence of It, then come back to this side to practice.' It is also said, 'The bodhisattva is endowed with the six perfections and myriad practices.' The teaching says, 'If there is a single sentient being not yet liberated, I shall never attain right awakening.' Vows are boundless; sentient beings are boundless; practicing thus is therefore named the bodhisattva's sharing different species (below, 'different species within sameness' is the same).
