僧問：「幻本何真？」師曰：「幻本元真。」（法眼別云：「幻本不真。」）僧云「當幻何顯？」師曰：「即幻即顯。」（法眼別云：「幻即無當。」）僧云：「恁麼則始終不離于幻也。」師曰：「覓幻相不可得。」

A monk asked, "How is the root of illusion true?" The Master said, "The root of illusion is originally true." (Fayan said as an alternative, "The root of illusion is not true.") The monk said, "When it is an illusion, how is it revealed?" The Master said, "Right in illusion it is revealed." (Fayan said as an alternative, "Illusion has no correspondence.") The monk said, "If so, then from beginning to end it is not separate from illusion." The Master said, "Seeking an illusory mark cannot be attained."
