慈湛居士字禪海，丹州野野村人也，姓菅原氏，假字清左衛門，原名廣次，少卜居京師，嚮往鷹峯覺城和尚，執弟子禮。曩者請予刊《洞山語錄》，既卒其業，今也刊《曹山語錄》，附乎曩者所刊，以為壹帙。廣布法寶，所鳩功利，以薦婦與女，又預修自冥福者乎！婦也者，慈照禪尼者。女也者，智貞善女者，將其芳名標出乎右，又記其事，而傳居士勇為於不朽矣。

Layman Cizhan, styled Chanhai, was a person of Nono Village in Tanba Province, surnamed Sugawara, courtesy-named Sezaemon, originally named Hirotsugu. When young, he settled his residence in the capital, set his aspiration toward Reverend Kakujō of Takagamine, and served him with the etiquette of a disciple. Formerly, he requested me to carve the Dongshan yulu; having completed that task, now he has also carved the Caoshan yulu, appending it to the previous carving to form a single volume. By widely distributing the Dharma treasure, the accumulated merits and benefits are dedicated to his wife and daughter, and also to cultivate beforehand his own posthumous bliss! As for the wife, she is the Chan nun Cishō; as for the daughter, she is the good woman Chijō. Recording their fragrant names above and writing this record of these deeds will transmit the layman's courageous act to immortality.
