1.68

A monk brought up: "Yaoshan asked a monk, 'How old are you?' He said, 'Seventy-two.' Yaoshan said, 'Is it seventy-two?' He said, 'It is.' Yaoshan then struck him. What is the meaning of this?" The Master said, "The first arrow was still tolerable; the second arrow shot the man deeply." The monk said, "How could he have avoided this blow?" The Master said, "Once the king's edict has gone forth, the feudal lords clear the road."
