The Master said: "What is called 'before Dīpaṃkara' has two kinds: one does not yet know existence, which is like milk mixed with blood; one knows existence, which is like obtaining the original thing before an intent has sprouted. This is called 'before Dīpaṃkara.' One kind knows existence, yet coming and going, words, sounds and forms, right and wrong, still do not belong to correct illuminating function, nor does one receive prediction; like milk mixed with blood, it is a matter on the side of leak and loss. This is called 'after Dīpaṃkara.' Only when the affairs of the three times are completely exhausted, inner and outer feelings forgotten, and continuity is obtained without interruption, does this first merit the name of the 'correct Dīpaṃkara,' and is called 'receiving prediction.'"
