Whenever Master Juzhi was questioned, he would only raise one finger. Later, an attendant boy was asked by an outsider, "What essential Dharma does the Master preach?" The boy also raised a finger. Hearing of this, Juzhi then cut off his finger with a blade. The boy, in great pain, ran away crying aloud. Juzhi called after him again; the boy turned his head, whereupon Juzhi raised his finger. The boy suddenly had an awakening. When Juzhi was about to pass away, he said to the assembly, "I attained Tianlong's one-finger Chan, and in an entire lifetime could not exhaust its use." Having finished speaking, he passed into quiescence. The Master said, "Where Juzhi undertook it was crude; he merely recognized a single dynamic and a single realm."
