祖燈相繼數百年間，出類邁倫、超今越古、盡妙盡神，道盛行於天下者數人而已，雲門大宗師特為之最，擒縱舒卷、縱橫變化，放開江海，魚龍得游泳之方；把斷乾坤，鬼神無行走之路，草木亦當稽首、土石為之發光。其傳於世者，對機室錄垂代勘辨，行錄歲久或有差舛，今參考刊正，一新鏤板，以永流播，益使本分鉗鎚，金聲而玉振；崢嶸世界，瓦解而氷銷。必若列派分宗，不免將錯就錯，論功紀德，已是埋沒前賢；畫樣起模，適足糊塗後學。若是頂門有眼，甚處與雲門相見。

During the several hundred years that the lamp of the patriarchs has been passed on, there have been only a few men who stood out from their peers and surpassed their contemporaries, who transcended present and past, completely wondrous and completely divine, whose Way flourished throughout the world. The Great Ancestral Master of Yunmen was particularly the foremost among them: capturing and releasing, rolling out and rolling up, freely transforming in all directions; throwing open the rivers and seas, fish and dragons find a place to swim; blocking off heaven and earth, ghosts and spirits have no path on which to walk; plants and trees should also bow their heads, and soil and stones shine forth light on his account. As for what has been transmitted to the world—his room records responding to encounters, hanging substitute words, and critical examinations—the record of his conduct, with the passage of many years, has perhaps developed errors and discrepancies. Now, having collated and corrected them, we have newly carved printing blocks so that it may circulate forever, further causing the hammer and tongs of the fundamental ground to sound like gold and ring like jade; and the towering world to crumble like tiles and melt like ice. If one must arrange lineages and divide into sects, one cannot avoid making the best of mistakes; to discuss merits and record virtues is already to bury the worthy predecessors; to draw patterns and set up models is merely enough to confuse later students. If one has an eye on the crown of one's head, where will one meet Yunmen face to face?
