或云：「古人道：『聲香味觸常三昧。』我與爾葛藤。」乃拈拄杖云：「這箇拄杖子是三昧，爾若識得拄杖子，即識得天下老宿。」又云：「爾若識得拄杖子，未夢見天下老宿脚跟下一莖毛。」代云：「和尚不使別人。」

He also said: "An ancient said: 'Sounds, smells, tastes, and touch are constantly samādhi.' I will get entangled with you." He then held up his staff and said: "This staff is samādhi. If you recognise the staff, then you recognise the veteran masters throughout the world." He also said: "Even if you recognise the staff, you have not yet dreamed of a single hair under the heels of the veteran masters throughout the world." Answering on their behalf, he said: "The upādhyāya does not employ other people."
