2.35

舉：「仰山問僧：『近離甚處？』僧云：『向南。』山拈起拄杖云：『彼中還說者箇麼？』僧云：『不說。』山云：『不說者箇，還說那箇麼？』僧云：『不說。』山召大德參堂去，其僧便去。山復召其僧，僧應喏。山云：『近前來。』僧近前，山便打。」師云：「仰山若無後語，爭識得人。」

He cited: "Yangshan asked a monk, 'Where have you recently come from?' The monk said, 'From the south.' Shan held up his staff and said, 'Do they also speak of this there?' The monk said, 'They do not speak of it.' Shan said, 'If they do not speak of this, do they speak of that?' The monk said, 'They do not speak of it.' Shan called to him, 'Venerable, go participate in the hall.' The monk then left. Shan called the monk again; the monk answered, 'Yes.' Shan said, 'Come forward.' The monk came forward, and Shan struck him." The Master said, "If Yangshan did not have the latter words, how could he have recognized the person?"
