因夏末問僧：「初秋夏末不觸平常，道將一句來。」代云：「初三十一，中九下七。」

At the end of the summer retreat, he asked a monk, "At the beginning of autumn and the end of summer, without violating the ordinary, bring forth a phrase!" Answering on their behalf, he said, "First third: eleven; middle: nine; lower: seven."
