Because he saw Ehu of Xinzhou ascend the hall and say: "Do not say that an uncompleted person is constantly adrift and unsettled; even if a completed person clearly knows they have a destination, they are still adrift and unsettled." The Master came down and brought up these words to ask the head monk: "Just now the upādhyāya instructed the assembly, saying: 'An uncompleted person is adrift and unsettled; a completed person is adrift and unsettled.' What is the meaning?" The head monk said, "Adrift and unsettled." The Master said, "You have dwelt here for a long time, head monk, your head white and your teeth yellow, yet you utter such talk!" The head monk said, "I wonder, what would you, senior monk, say?" The Master said, "If you want to speak, you can speak; if you see it, then you see it. If you do not see it, do not talk wildly." The head monk said, "What about the abbot saying 'adrift and unsettled'?" The Master said, "A cangue placed on the head, shackles placed on the feet." The head monk said, "In that case, then there is no Buddhadharma." The Master said, "This is the realm of the great beings Mañjuśrī and Samantabhadra."
