師在靈樹知聖大師會中為首座，時僧問知聖：「如何是祖師西來意？」聖云：「老僧無語。」却問僧：「忽然上碑合著得什麼語？」時有數僧下語皆不契，聖云：「汝去請首座來。」洎師至，聖乃舉前話問師，師云：「也不難。」聖云：「著得什麼語？」師云：「有人問如何是祖師西來意，但云『師知。』」聖深肯。

When the Master was the head monk in the assembly of Great Master Zhisheng of Lingshu, a monk asked Zhisheng, "What is the intention of the Patriarch in coming from the West?" Zhisheng said, "This old monk has no words." He then asked the monk, "If suddenly an inscription were placed on a stele, what words should be inscribed?" At that time, several monks offered phrases, but none hit the mark. Zhisheng said, "Go and invite the head monk to come." When the Master arrived, Zhisheng related the previous words and asked the Master. The Master said, "That is not difficult either." Zhisheng said, "What words should be inscribed?" The Master said, "If someone asks, 'What is the intention of the Patriarch in coming from the West?', simply say: 'The Master knows.'" Zhisheng deeply approved.
