When former virtuous ones accorded with transformation, none failed to leave testamentary admonitions; even when the World-Honoured One was about to enter parinirvāṇa, he also bequeathed instructions and precepts. Although I lack the virtue of former sages, having had the honor of nurturing the assembly in one region to the end of my life, I cannot remain silent without giving instruction. Ever since I resided at Lingshu and moved to this mountain, for more than thirty years in total, I have constantly urged and encouraged you day and night with the ancestral Way. If any of my words and phrases have been heard by your ears or seen by your eyes, those with eyes will know them; you must strictly preserve and maintain them. I am now already old and decrepit; my allotted lifespan is about to expire, changing from moment to moment, awaiting its end in the space of a breath. Yet sinking and drowning in birth and death, how many times has it been like this—it is not only now! Ever since I assumed the abbacy, I have deeply troubled you with the toil of assisting and supporting me; I feel only shame in my heart. After my passing, place me in the abbot's quarters. If the court should bestow a name plaque for the stūpa, simply hang it in the abbot's quarters; do not construct a separate building. You must not weep, wear mourning clothes, or prepare elaborate sacrifices and the like; this is my earnest intention. Those who have left household life originally take transcendence as their duty; do not conform to worldly customs. As for the affairs of the abbacy and the like, let all follow the established practices; receive all those who come without departing from the constant rules. All disciples should look up to and follow the instructions of the elders. Everything pertaining to the estates, properties, and utensils of the monastery should all be entirely used for the expenditures of this temple; do not transfer them to other monasteries. The teachings have clear instructions that items of the eastern and western corridors should not even be used interchangeably; you should know this. If you can abide by my admonition, you will enable the Buddha Dharma to circulate and propagate, and heavenly spirits will protect and defend it, not failing the four obligations and bringing benefit to the world. If anyone violates this, they are not of my fellowship. Strive on! Strive on! The great deadline is approaching; at the point of departure, I briefly give this testamentary admonition. Make effort! Make effort! Abide well. Do you still understand? If you do not understand, the Buddha has clear teachings—rely on them and practice accordingly.
