During a meal, the Master asked a monk, "Where are you from?" He said, "Huainan." He asked another monk, "Where are you from?" He said, "Jingzhao." The Master held up a steamed cake and said, "I have nothing to reach you, the man of Huainan, and nothing to reach you, the man of Jingzhao." Neither monk had a reply. The Master then took the steamed cake, broke it, and turned around, saying, "How do I spare you?" Again there was no reply. Answering on their behalf, he said, "It is not that the upādhyāya spares us." Answering on their behalf for the previous remark, he said, "A universal offering to all." He also said, "For now, save it to offer to the upādhyāya."
