The Master sometimes said, "I dare not hope that you have waves moving against the current, yet even having the intention of going along with the current is hard to come by." He then cited: "When Liangsui first visited Magu, Magu saw him coming and immediately went to hoe weeds. Liangsui arrived at the place where he was hoeing weeds, but Magu paid him no attention at all, and returned to the abbot's quarters, shutting the door. For three consecutive days Liangsui went and knocked on the door. On the third day, as soon as he knocked, Magu asked, 'Who is it?' Liangsui said, 'Upādhyāya, do not deceive Liangsui. If I had not come to pay homage to the Upādhyāya, I would nearly have been cheated of my whole life by the sūtras and treatises.'" The Master said, "There are waves moving against the current; being able to enter now is the intention of going along with the current, and is also called the moment of releasing both." He also said, "When Magu asked 'Who is it?' and Liangsui said 'Do not deceive Liangsui'—was this not the moment of seeing through Magu at their meeting? 'If I had not come to pay homage to the Upādhyāya, I would nearly have been cheated of my whole life by the sūtras and treatises'—he also knew that there are places that cheat people. Later, Liangsui returned to the capital to take leave of the Emperor and the Great Masters and Venerables of the Left and Right Streets. They repeatedly urged him to stay. During the tea banquet, Liangsui said, 'What everyone knows, Liangsui entirely knows; what Liangsui knows, none of you know.'" The Master said, "What is that which Liangsui knew?"
