[The Master] asked a monk, "Where have you come from?"
The monk said, "I have come from the stūpa site at Nanhua."
The Master said, "What words did the Patriarch have?"
The monk said, "He had [some]."
The Master said, "You must not cite them wrongly."
The monk said, "Please, Upādhyāya, understand my words."
The Master said, "I say that your 'one' does not make sense, and your 'two' is not right."
Answering on their behalf, he said, "The Upādhyāya is too extreme!"
He then ordered someone to ask the mill master: "Does the person strike the sieve, or does the sieve strike the person?"
There was no reply.
Answering on their behalf, he said, "Lately, I have eaten a lot of noodles."
He also said, "When a guest comes, one must attend to him; when a thief comes, one must strike him."
