師一日侍溈山，忽聞鳥鳴，溈山云：「伊說事却徑。」師云：「不可向別人道。」溈山云：「何故恁麼道？」師云：「為伊說太直。」溈山云：「多少法門寂子一時推下。」師云：「推下事作麼生？」溈山敲禪床三下。

One day, while the Master was attending Guishan, they suddenly heard a bird call. Guishan said: "It speaks of the matter quite directly." The Master said: "You must not say so to others." Guishan said: "Why do you say so?" The Master said: "Because its speech is too straightforward." Guishan said: "How many dharma gates has Jizi swept aside at once!" The Master said: "How is the matter of sweeping aside?" Guishan knocked three times on the meditation seat.
