師作沙彌時，念經聲高，乳源和尚咄云：「這沙彌念經恰似哭。」師云：「慧寂祇恁麼，未審和尚如何？」乳源乃顧視。師云：「若恁麼，與哭何異？」乳源便休。

When the Master was a śrāmaṇera, he chanted sutras in a loud voice. Upādhyāya Ruyuan scolded him, saying, "This śrāmaṇera chanting sutras sounds just like wailing." The Master said, "Huiji is just like this; I wonder how the upādhyāya is?" Ruyuan looked back at him. The Master said, "If it is like that, how does it differ from wailing?" Ruyuan then dropped the matter.
