師共一僧語，旁有僧云：「語底是文殊，默底是維摩。」師云：「不語、不默底，莫是汝否？」僧默然。師云：「何不現神通？」云：「不辭現神通，祇恐和尚收作教。」師云：「鑒汝來處，未有教外底眼。」

The Master was speaking with a monk. A monk to the side said, "The speaking one is Mañjuśrī; the silent one is Vimalakīrti." The Master said, "The one who neither speaks nor stays silent—could that be you?" The monk remained silent. The Master said, "Why do you not display supernatural powers?" The monk said, "I do not shrink from displaying supernatural powers; I only fear that the upādhyāya would reduce them to the teachings." The Master said, "Observing where you come from, you do not yet have the eye beyond the teachings."
