The Master engaged spiritual capacities and benefited beings, serving as a standard for the Chan school. He moved again to Dongping. When he was about to pass away, several monks stood attending upon him. The Master instructed them with a verse, saying: / "One, two, two, three sons; / Look straight ahead, and look upward again. / Two mouths, one has no tongue— / This is my fundamental tenet." / When midday arrived, he ascended the seat to bid farewell to the assembly, and spoke a verse again, saying: / "Having completed seventy-seven years, / Impermanence falls on this very day. / The sun disc is right at noon; / With both hands I clasp my bent knees." / Having finished speaking, he embraced his knees with both hands and expired. The following year, Chan Master Nanta Yong relocated his sacred relics back to Mount Yang and built a stupa below Jiyun Peak. [The court] bestowed the posthumous title "Stupa of Wondrous Radiance of Chan Master Zhitong".
