While the Master was herding cattle at Guishan, Sthavira Titian Tai asked, "I do not ask about one lion appearing on the tip of a single hair; what about a hundred billion lions appearing on the tips of a hundred billion hairs?" The Master mounted his ox and returned. While standing in attendance upon Guishan, he had just related the previous words when he saw Tai arrive. The Master said, "It is this very sthavira." Guishan then asked, "A hundred billion lions appearing on the tips of a hundred billion hairs—was that not spoken by the sthavira?" Tai said, "It was." The Master said, "Just at the time of appearing, do they appear before the hair or after the hair?" Tai said, "At the time of appearing, one does not speak of before or after." Guishan laughed heartily. The Master said, "The lion's waist is broken." He then went down.
