Guishan asked the Master, "If someone suddenly asks you, how would you respond?" The Master said, "If Uncle Dongsi were here, I would not be left in lonely quiet." Guishan said, "I pardon you the offense of not responding." The Master said, "Giving life and taking life depend on just a single word." Guishan said, "I do not deny your view, but there is someone else who does not agree." The Master said, "Who?" Guishan pointed to an exposed pillar and said, "This one." The Master said, "What does it say?" Guishan said, "What does it say?" The Master said, "The white rat shifts and changes; the silver terrace remains constant."
