One day the Master was sitting on the Dharma hall. Seeing a monk come from outside, make inquiries, and stand with crossed hands to the east looking at him, the Master lowered his left foot. The monk then moved to the west side and stood with crossed hands; the Master lowered his right foot. The monk moved to the middle and stood with crossed hands; the Master withdrew both feet. The monk bowed. The Master said, "Since this old monk has lived here, I have never struck a person." He took up his staff and struck him, whereupon the monk soared into the empty sky and departed.
