A dānapati presented silk to Guishan. The Master asked, "The upādhyāya receives such offerings from the dānapati; with what will you repay him?" Guishan tapped the meditation seat to show him. The Master said, "How can the upādhyāya take what belongs to the public and use it as his own?" (In another version: Guishan asked the Master, "A lay disciple has brought three bolts of silk to ransom the bell for me, thereby gaining merit for the people of the world." The Master said, "The lay disciple has silk to ransom the bell for the upādhyāya; with what will the upādhyāya recompense him?" Guishan tapped the meditation seat three times with his staff and said, "I recompense him with this." The Master said, "If it is this, what is it used for?" Guishan again tapped the meditation seat three times and said, "Why do you disesteem this?" The Master said, "I do not disesteem this; it is just that it belongs to everyone." Guishan said, "Since you know it belongs to everyone, why do you still come to me seeking something to recompense him?" The Master said, "I only wonder why the upādhyāya takes what belongs to everyone to perform personal courtesies." Guishan said, "Have you not seen that when Master Bodhidharma came to this land from the Western Heavens, he also brought this object to perform courtesies? All of you are recipients of his token of trust.")
