Later the Master resided at Qingliang. He ascended the hall and said, "For those who have left home, simply according with the seasons and periods is enough: when it is cold, it is cold; when it is hot, it is hot. If you wish to know the meaning of Buddha-nature, you should observe the causes and conditions of the seasons and periods. Ancient and modern skillful means are not few. Have you not seen Upādhyāya Shitou, who, because of reading the Zhaolun where it says, 'He who integrates the myriad things as himself—is he not the sage alone?', immediately said, 'The sage has no self, yet there is nothing that is not himself.' There is a piece of text called the Can tong qi, which concludes by saying, 'The mind of the great sage of India—it does not go beyond these words.' In between, he was also just speaking according to the occasions. Sthaviras! Now you wish to integrate the myriad things into yourselves, because on the great earth there is not a single dharma to be seen. He also admonished, 'Do not pass the daylight in vain.' Just now I told you, sthaviras, that simply according with the seasons and periods is enough. If you shift the seasons and miss the periods, that is passing the daylight in vain, producing an understanding of form in what is non-form. Sthaviras! Producing an understanding of form in what is non-form is shifting the seasons and missing the periods. Tell me, is taking form as non-form appropriate or not? Sthaviras! If you understand it like this, there is no connection at all; it is precisely running frantically between two extremes—what use is there in it? Sthaviras! Simply keep to your lot and pass the time according with the seasons; that will be fine. Take care."
