Ascending the hall, a monk asked, "What is the environment of Fenyang?" The Master said, "Zixia Peak is high—few climb it; the waters of Xihe are full—many ask for the ferry." "What is the person within the environment?" The Master said, "Sitting long, watching the direction of the wind; burning incense, lighting the sacred lamp." He asked, "What is the Master's family custom?" The Master said, "The three mysteries open the orthodox path; a single phrase shatters heterodox traditions." "What is the Master's livelihood?" The Master said, "Normally grasping nothing, making offerings to monks from the five lakes." "I wonder, what do you eat?" The Master said, "Heavenly sudhā food is no rare delicacy; of the single flavor of fine broth, one stops as soon as full." He asked, "What is the Master's song?" The Master said, "Without all six pitch-pipes sounding, people listen with delight; Bo Ya vainly plucked for Ziqi." "Is there anyone who can harmonize with it?" The Master said, "Having a mouth, there is no need to discuss worldly affairs; having no mind, it is only to yearn for one who knows the tone." "Then the Master can harmonize with it." The Master said, "You try to harmonize and let us see." The monk had nothing to say. The Master said, "A sudden bolt of thunder in the heavens startles the universe, yet the toad at the bottom of the well does not lift its head." He asked, "What is Fenyang's arrow?" The Master said, "Hou Yi has just begun to draw his bow, and the nine sun-crows lose their color." "One must know you are an expert hand." The Master said, "Once the stone tiger is wounded, the golden arrow must sink its feathers." "What is the Master's hair-severing sword?" The Master said, "It does not rely on Gan Jiang's forging; emerging from its scabbard, it penetrates with divine radiance." "What about one who uses it?" The Master said, "Where there are monsters, it slays evil omens; where there is the unarisen, there is no need to hone it." "Do you permit others to transmit it or not?" The Master said, "On the great thoroughfare of Chang'an there are no barricades or garrisons; carriages and horses flowing together cause no obstruction at all."
