Having accepted an invitation in Xiangzhou, he passed through Hua County and ascended the hall, saying: "The moment I ascended this seat, the Buddha's kindness was already repaid. If I chatter on further, what benefit would there be? Even so, though officialdom does not allow a needle, privately carriages and horses may pass." A monk bowed. The Master said, "Hold on, hold on! The incense has not yet been burned." Raising a piece of incense, he said: "This single pellet of incense, from antiquity to the present, has never ceased. The Golden-Hued One once burned it, and now I kindle it with my own hands. Is there anyone who understands where it lands?" He then burned the incense. He spoke again: "The Patriarchal mind-seal is entirely beyond verbal expression; yet in the dynamic of guiding and teaching, how could there be no speech? When the thunderous roar rumbles, who dares face the dynamic? When the lion stretches and yawns, a thousand foxes vanish without a trace." The monk came forward again and bowed. The Master said, "This ācārya deserves thirty blows of the staff, but mindful of his earnestness, I will let him off for once." The monk asked, "I do not ask about the precise phrase of Sanfeng; what about the intention of the two men's minds?" The Master said, "Do you remember?" "In that case, the true wind of the Ru River and the precious peak rise again." The Master said, "Do not create knots where there are none." "Regarding the sages from antiquity, I ask the Master to guide us." The Master said, "A hundred shattered fragments." "In that case, I thank the Master for guiding us." The Master said, "Suru, suru." The monk asked, "The phenomenal mark of the unconditioned Dharma is difficult for people to see; please, Master, use an expedient to show it to the assembly." The Master said, "You must not cite it mistakenly." "In that case, it is universally heard." The Master said, "A mistake! Novice, give him a strike with the whisk."
