小參，舉：「德山示眾云：『今夜不答話，問話者三十棒。』時有僧出禮拜，德山便打。僧云：『話也未問，打某甲作麼？』德山云：『爾是甚麼人？』僧云：『新羅人。』德山云：『據爾擬蹈船舷，好與三十棒。』」時有僧出云：「承古有言，擬蹈船舷，好與三十棒，學人上來請師棒。」師擲下拄杖便歸方丈。

At an informal gathering, [the Master] cited: "Deshan instructed the assembly, saying, 'Tonight I will not answer questions; whoever asks a question will receive thirty blows of the staff.' At that time, a monk came forward and bowed. Deshan immediately struck him. The monk said, 'I have not yet asked a question; why do you strike me?' Deshan said, 'What kind of person are you?' The monk said, 'A person from Silla.' Deshan said, 'Before you even stepped onto the gunwale of the boat, you deserved thirty blows.'" At that time, a monk came forward and said, "Inheriting the ancient saying, 'Before you even stepped onto the gunwale of the boat, you deserved thirty blows,' the student comes forward to request the Master's staff." The Master threw down his staff and returned directly to the abbot's quarters.
