A monk asked, "A student has not attained the matter within this: what is oneself?" The Master said, "Do not forget that time's phrase at this time; when not yet attained, one must know the contrary and concordant mechanisms." "What about after attaining it?" The Master said, "Thirty years later, do not cite it mistakenly." He asked, "What about when the divine turtle has not yet shown omens?" The Master said, "Rocking the boat in the sea with a laugh, raising the oar, looking toward the journey ahead." He asked, "When one is on the same path through the three realms and there is no way to escape, what then?" The Master said, "How intolerable when wild bandits arise without a time! Face to face, formless, recognize them." He asked, "Embracing an uncut jade, I turn to the Master; please, Master, carve and polish it." The Master said, "Tomorrow morning offer it again for the King of Chu to inspect." "In that case, only those of the same path know it." The Master said, "Though the severed foot is recognized as precious, gods and humans cannot fathom it." He asked, "The ten thousand dharmas are fundamentally empty; how can the mind arise?" The Master said, "If you had not presented this question, how could you have reached Fenyang?" "In that case, at the moment of arising, arising is non-arising." The Master said, "Knowing oneself capable of being noble, there is no need to deliberate further." He asked, "What about when a single phrase cannot be spoken?" The Master said, "The ten thousand environments have no discrepancy; the blue sky does not know itself." "How should one comprehend this?" The Master said, "Distinct and clear like a candle—what need is there for further suspicion?" He asked, "For what kind of person is the food of non-action offered?" The Master said, "Those of a thousand aspects and without form, assembling together without adornment." "In that case, the great assembly has something to rely upon." The Master said, "Within the three-thousandfold world, peerless in benefiting the multitude of beings." He asked, "'In gate after gate, all environments interpenetrate or do not interpenetrate'—what is not interpenetrating?" The Master said, "Passing through the mud today was not easy." He asked, "When sweet dew pours down repeatedly, why do the hundred grasses not sprout?" The Master said, "The field is coarse and does not retain water; what can the Dragon King do about it?" He asked, "What is the mind-ground Dharma door?" The Master said, "Do not seek it from others." "I beg the Master to point it out again." The Master said, "You left home at Guyin." He asked, "When the curtain is rolled up and the fan opened, where is the person in question?" The Master said, "The ten thousand commoners sing of the emperor's transforming influence; the mysterious sound widens through the great void." "In that case, the bright mirror should be hung today, and the people of the age all congratulate the era of peace." The Master said, "A single sound is proclaimed everywhere, the three borders are tranquil; from the four directions and eight sides, all come to pay court." He asked, "What is a drop of water from Xihe?" The Master said, "Those who drink it will never hunger." "In that case, its cold flavor is known to few." The Master said, "Moistening and nourishing does not depend upon the source." He asked, "What is the walking-ground of all Buddhas?" The Master said, "Directly, the path of non-arising; when walking, one does not stir the dust." "In that case, I thank the Master for the expedient." The Master said, "The road east, west, south, and north: no need for further extravagance."
