因問當初得法緣，不言東土及西天，鎮州有菜名蘿蔔，濟却飢瘡幾萬千。僧問趙州：「如何是祖師西來意？」州云：「庭前柏樹子。」云：「和尚莫將境示人。」云：「我不將境示汝。」云：「如何是祖師西來意？」云：「庭前柏樹子。」

When asked about the original conditions for attaining the Dharma, / He spoke neither of the Eastern Land nor of the Western Heavens. / Zhenzhou has a vegetable called radish; / It has relieved many tens of thousands of hungry boils. / A monk asked Zhaozhou: "What is the meaning of the Patriarch's coming from the West?" Zhaozhou said: "The cypress tree in the courtyard." The monk said: "Venerable, do not show people by means of an object!" Zhaozhou said: "I am not showing you by means of an object." The monk said: "What is the meaning of the Patriarch's coming from the West?" Zhaozhou said: "The cypress tree in the courtyard."
