藥山看經次，僧問：「和尚尋常不許人看經，為什麼却自看？」山云：「我祇要遮眼。」云：「某甲學和尚得麼？」山云：「汝若看，牛皮也須穿。」

While Yaoshan was reading a sūtra, a monk asked, "The Venerable usually does not permit people to read sūtras; why do you read them yourself?"
Yaoshan said, "I only want to shade my eyes."
He asked, "May I emulate the Venerable?"
Yaoshan said, "If you read it, even cowhide would surely be pierced through."
