藥山示眾云：「智不到處切忌道著，道著即頭角生。」道吾便出去。雲巖問藥山：「智師兄為什麼不秖對和尚？」山曰：「却是智頭陀會。爾去問取他。」却來問智師兄：「適來為什麼不祇對和尚？」云：「我今日頭痛。爾去問取和尚。」巖遷化後，吾云：「雲巖不知有，悔不當時向伊道。雖然如是，要且不違藥山之子。」

Yaoshan instructed the assembly, saying, "Where wisdom does not reach, be sure to avoid speaking of it; if you speak of it, horns will sprout on your head."
Daowu immediately walked out.
Yunyan asked Yaoshan, "Why did Senior Brother Zhi not respond to the Venerable?"
Yaoshan said, "Rather, it is Zhi the ascetic who understands. Go and ask him."
[Yunyan] then went and asked Senior Brother Zhi, "Why did you not respond to the Venerable just now?"
He said, "I have a headache today. Go and ask the Venerable."
After Yunyan passed away, [Dao]wu said, "Yunyan did not know it exists. I regret not having told him at that time. Even though it was like this, after all he did not go against being a son of Yaoshan."
