藥山打鼓，高沙彌捧鉢，作舞入堂，山便拋下鼓槌云：「是第幾和？」沙彌云：「第二和。」「作麼生是第一和？」沙彌就桶內盛一杓飯便去。

Yaoshan beat the drum. Novice Gao held his bowl and entered the hall dancing. Yaoshan threw down the drumsticks and said, "Which refrain is this?"
The novice said, "The second refrain."
"What is the first refrain?"
The novice went to the tub, scooped out a ladle of rice, and left.
