南泉問僧：「甚處來？」云：「神山打羅來。」泉云：「手打脚打？」僧無語。泉云：「爾問，我與爾道。」僧云：「手打脚打？」泉云：「向後遇明眼人舉似。」後法眼問僧：「神山打羅話，爾作麼生會？」僧便拜，眼云：「我擗脊棒，爾作麼生？」僧云：「若不打，何處討崇壽？」眼云：「別處即得，這裏不得。」

Nanquan asked a monk, "Where have you come from?" The monk said, "I have come from beating the sieve at Shenshan." Nanquan said, "Did you beat it with your hands or with your feet?" The monk had no words. Nanquan said, "Ask me, and I will tell you." The monk said, "Did you beat it with your hands or with your feet?" Nanquan said, "Later on, when you meet a person with clear eyes, bring this up." Later, Fayan asked a monk, "How do you understand Shenshan's story of beating the sieve?" The monk bowed. Fayan said, "I have a staff that splits the spine—what will you do?" The monk said, "If you do not strike, where will you seek Chongshou?" Fayan said, "In other places that would do, but here it does not."
