李翱尚書問藥山：「如何是道？」山以手指天云：「會麼？」李云：「不會。」師云：「雲在青天，水在瓶。」翱乃述一偈上師：「練得身形似寉形，千株松下兩函經，我來問道無餘說，雲在青天水在瓶。」

Minister Li Ao asked Yaoshan, "What is the Way?" Yaoshan pointed his finger to the sky and said, "Do you understand?" Li said, "I do not understand." The master said, "Clouds in the blue sky, water in the pitcher." Ao then composed a gāthā and presented it to the master: / "Having trained his physical form to resemble a crane, / Beneath a thousand pines are two cases of scriptures. / I came to ask about the Way and there was no other speech: / Clouds are in the blue sky, water is in the pitcher."
