六祖問讓和尚：「甚麼處來？」「嵩山安和尚處來。」祖云：「甚麼物？恁麼來？」「說似一物即不堪。」祖云：「還假修證也無？」「修證即不無，污染即不得。」祖云：「只此不污染，是諸佛之護念，汝善護持。」

The Sixth Patriarch asked Venerable Rang: "Where have you come from?" "I have come from Venerable An of Mount Song." The Patriarch said: "What thing comes thus?" "To explain it as resembling a single thing would not hit the mark." The Patriarch said: "Does it still rely on cultivation and realization, or not?" "Cultivation and realization are not absent, but defilement cannot be had." The Patriarch said: "Just this non-defilement is what all Buddhas protect and keep in mind; you should preserve it well."
