趙州見僧到便問：「曾到此間麼？」云：「不曾到。」州云：「喫茶去。」或云：「曾到。」州亦云：「喫茶去。」院主問：「不曾到，喫茶去；到來為甚也喫茶去？」州召院主，主應諾，州云：「喫茶去。」

Whenever Zhaozhou saw a monk arrive, he would ask, "Have you been here before?"
The monk said, "I have not been here."
Zhaozhou said, "Go drink tea."
Another said, "I have been here."
Zhaozhou also said, "Go drink tea."
The monastery director asked, "To one who has not been here, you say 'Go drink tea'; why also say 'Go drink tea' to one who has been here?"
Zhaozhou called out, "Director!"
The director answered.
Zhaozhou said, "Go drink tea."
