2.72

韓愈侍郎問大顛：「和尚春秋多少？」顛提起數珠云：「會麼？」侍云：「不會。」顛云：「晝夜一百八。」明日復來，門首見首座，遂問：「和尚道：晝夜一百八。意旨如何？」首座叩齒三下。侍郎至方丈復問：「晝夜一百八意，旨如何？」大顛叩齒三下。侍云：「元來佛法不別。」顛云：「侍郎見何道理？」侍云：「適來問首座，亦恁麼祇對。」顛請首座問：「適來恁麼祗對侍郎是否？」座云：「是。」顛乃打趁出院。

Vice Minister Han Yu asked Dadian, "What is the Venerable's age?"
Dadian held up his rosary and said, "Do you understand?"
The Vice Minister said, "I do not understand."
Dadian said, "Day and night, one hundred and eight."
The next day he came again, met the head monk at the gate, and asked, "The Venerable said, 'Day and night, one hundred and eight.' What was his meaning?"
The head monk clicked his teeth three times.
The Vice Minister went to the abbot's quarters and asked again, "What is the meaning of 'Day and night, one hundred and eight'?"
Dadian clicked his teeth three times.
The Vice Minister said, "Originally the Buddhadharma is not different."
Dadian said, "What principle does the Vice Minister see?"
The Vice Minister said, "Just now when I asked the head monk, he also answered like this."
Dadian summoned the head monk and asked, "Did you just answer the Vice Minister like that?"
The head monk said, "Yes."
Dadian then beat him and expelled him from the monastery.
