Xuansha instructed the assembly, saying, "The veteran elders of the various quarters all say they guide beings and benefit the living. If three kinds of sick persons suddenly come, how will you receive them? For one who suffers from blindness, if you pick up the mallet or raise the fly-whisk, he does not see it. For one who suffers from deafness, as for the samādhi of words and speech, he does not hear it. For one who suffers from muteness, if you have him speak, he cannot speak. How then will you receive them? If you cannot receive them, the Buddhadharma has no efficacious test."
