When Guizong was hoeing weeds, he saw a snake and immediately cut it in two. A monk asked, "I had long looked up to Guizong, but arriving here, you are merely a coarse-behaving śramaṇa."
Zong said, "Are you coarse, or am I coarse?"
Later, Xuefeng asked Deshan, "What was the ancient's intention in cutting the snake?"
Deshan struck him immediately. Xuefeng ran off. Deshan called out, saying, "Patch-robed monk! Patch-robed monk!"
Xuefeng turned his head. Deshan said, "When you awaken in the future, only then will you know this old fellow's thorough grandmotherly heart."
