Guishan ordered a monk to carry a letter and a mirror to Yangshan. Yangshan took it, held it up, and said, "If you say it is Guishan's mirror, it is in Yangshan's hands; if you say it is Yangshan's mirror, it was sent by Guishan. Can anyone settle this?" The assembly had no words. He then threw it down and broke it, and turned to the monk envoy, saying, "When you reach the Venerable's place, just recount it like this."
